The Style Wake Up with Wendy Moore: The Lowdown On Quilts And Linen

As a Snooze ambassador, I’m thrilled to present our new series, The Style Wake Up. In this series, I’m exploring all things bedding, furniture, and bedroom styling and we’re starting with the basics: choosing the right bed linen for the season, and what to do when the temperature changes.

As a small, private space that is ‘just for you’, the bedroom is a wonderful place to express your style, but for it to be truly great, it must also deliver a good night’s sleep. That means it has to feel good as well as look good.

The Importance of Getting the Layers Right

There are a few reasons why achieving the optimal temperature in your bedroom is important. The right temperature at night is crucial for sleep quality because it aligns with our body's natural temperature regulation and promotes deeper sleep stages and uninterrupted, restorative sleep cycles.

Quilt weights:

Switching quilts between seasons can have a big impact on your sleep quality. In summer, I use lightweight cotton quilts - fantastic for their breathability, allowing you to naturally regulate your body temperature.

When the temperature drops, I choose wool or alpaca quilts. These are not only super-cosy and comfy, but they look fantastic, adding a luxurious quality to your bed. Alpaca fleece is known for its excellent thermal performance, and it's lanolin-free, often making it more suitable for those with wool sensitivities.

At the end of the season, launder or dry clean your quilts so they’re fresh for next year, before packing them away in a space-saving vacuum bag.

Sheets and mattress protectors:

Using a good quality mattress protector can help wick away moisture, ensuring that you stay cool and dry throughout the night.

For sheet sets, I love a good quality pre-washed linen set for its gentle, cosy feel and breathable qualities, switching it out for cotton when I want a crisper, more sophisticated vibe - plus, it’s lightweight and machine washable.

Bamboo cotton blends are also soft on the skin, and great in all seasons.

Pillows:

Your own comfort will always drive your pillow choice - every individual has a height and density preference and, put simply, we just like what we like.

For those of you that sleep hot at night, try a Technogel® Delux pillow. The memory foam shapes itself to your body and has great heat distribution, while the pillow’s cool gel surface helps distribute heat, meaning it feels cooler on the skin.

Quilt Size and How it Can Affect Your Room

No matter the season, upsize your quilt and quilt cover for a luxurious and generous look. Upsizing provides extra coverage, ensuring that both sides of the bed have ample blanket, which is especially useful if you share the bed with a partner - no more fighting over the doona!

A larger quilt with its excess drape also looks elegant, creating a tailored and polished look that enhances the overall aesthetic of your bedroom. It also eliminates the struggle of tucking in a quilt that's too short, making your bed-making routine easier and more efficient.

During colder months, the extra fabric offers added warmth, helping you stay snug and comfortable throughout the night.

Shop the look: Summer Bedrooms

Summer style is all about cool materials and colours. I love the chic blue and white theme, dressed with lighter layers for breathability.

Bamboo Cotton quilt cover set - King Size: A bamboo and cotton blend feels great against the skin, and looks so crisp and fresh - perfect for summer rooms. I paired it with European pillowcases and accent cushions.

Cotton Percale sheet set - Queen Size: This laidback hue offers a touch of sophistication, thanks to its neat percale matt finish.

Stockholm & Lisette bedside tables in Dark Brown: I chose mismatched bedside tables for this bedroom, to keep the look interesting yet cohesive. They also add some extra storage and practicality.
