A bedroom for a kid can be an inspiring place. It’s far more than just a functional room where you go to sleep every night. A bedroom is a place where your child can enjoy a sense of independence, a place where their imagination can run wild, creativity can be unleashed, and they can learn for life. Whether it offers an inviting area to study for school, the solitude to formulate thoughts, or the space to create a Lego masterpiece, there’s so much a child can accomplish from the safety, comfort, and sanctuary of their bedroom.
We look at how you can help your child make the most out of their bedroom space during their formative years and ensure it’s a place of fond memories, boundless creativity, and relaxation.
Design
When a bedroom space is inviting, you want to spend time there, no matter your age. To design an inviting kids’ bedroom space first consider your child’s age and the practicalities of what they need in their room. A bedroom for a 4-year-old will need to be considered differently from that of a 13-year-old for example. Should you incorporate areas for imaginative play? Or study? Do you want to go bold and playful or versatile and minimal?
If you like the idea of a bold design and creating a fun space that’s bright and playful, consider incorporating the brightness in the bed frame, furniture, artwork, or decals. Although brightly painted bedrooms may be attractive to children, they may not necessarily be the most relaxing spaces day to day.
If it’s longevity you’re after, choose a minimal or contemporary frame and neutral tones. Add personality with furnishings, cushions, and artwork. This allows the frame you choose to last through changes in age and style preferences.
Wallpaper
Having a feature wall or using patterned or textured wallpaper as an accent is a great way to define and add personality to your child’s bedroom. A well-chosen wallpaper can do a lot of the design work for you and help lift the room.
Storage
Complement your design with ample storage. Perhaps more than any other time in life, having storage in the bedroom is important to keep the room more organised. We’re not suggesting that your child will magically become tidier, but at least if there is storage on offer, it will be easier to keep clutter at bay.
If you’re not blessed with built-in wardrobes at home, consider a dresser or tallboy to help keep clothing and other bedroom essentials organised and tucked away out of sight.
Under-bed storage is a fantastic way of utilising your available space. This style of bed base makes effective use of space and helps control the amount of visual clutter in the bedroom while keeping things close by and easy to access should you need to.
Reading/Study/Play Nooks
Perhaps your child loves to study and can’t wait to get started on their homework each day. If not, then creating designated learning areas within the bedroom is a great idea and may inspire a more focused energy. If your child has reached the age of completing homework and study, adding a desk to the bedroom gives them a place to think and learn uninterrupted.
If your child is not quite studying age, then a play nook can be just as inviting. Perhaps a little tepee in the corner of the room where they can escape and get lost in the mood of the day.
A comfortable, feature armchair in the corner of the bedroom can also serve as a nice place to read or (yes, sometimes) a place to watch or play on their favourite device during downtime.
Loft-Style beds
Loft-style beds are a great use of space and are usually made up of a top bunk with a space underneath where you can create a study or play nook. Add a desk, work-station or colouring-in area to create a more grown-up style cubby space in place of a traditional bottom bunk. Not only is this a space-saving solution, but a defined and dedicated area within the bedroom your child can use to learn, create, or relax.
Multifunctional beds
If you’re stuck for space and creating multiple areas within the bedroom is not practical, consider a multifunctional bed that has shelving and/or a desk built into the frame. These types of bed frames remove the need for separate spaces within the bedroom by providing space for everything you need within the one frame.
Add a rug
Complete your child’s bedroom with a plush rug. Rugs in the bedroom add a touch of homeliness and cosiness and can help tie everything together. Rugs can also help absorb sound if you have a budding rockstar on your hands.
Creating a bedroom for your child to flourish may take a bit of effort, but the reward is a nurturing, uplifting place of comfort, and a space that can encourage a happy, creative, more relaxed little Snoozer.
